The Physics of Sand Dune Formation and Migration on Mars
ثبت نشده
چکیده
Sand dunes have been observed throughout the surface of the planet Mars. Movement of these dunes has been theorized and inferred from the lack of craters on dunes. Dune movement has not yet been directly imaged, however. Understanding sand movement processes is vital to a correct Martian climate model, as well as the safety of future missions to Mars. Imagery from several Martian orbiters was analyzed in an attempt to discern movement of Martian sand dunes. Additional imagery from Mars Exploration Rover Opportunity was analyzed to search for evidence of dune movement or saltation at Meridiani Planum, Mars. Data from Opportunity shows that a saltation event occurred sometime in July 2007, at the rim of Victoria Crater. No dune movement was detected, suggesting that dune movement, if it occurs on Mars, is on the scale of centimeters or less per Martian year. Future studies should benefit from added high-resolution satellite imagery, which is currently being collected by the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, and, if current theories on dune movement are correct, dune movement should be discernable within a few years.

Dune formation on the present Mars.
We apply a model for sand dunes to calculate formation of dunes on Mars under the present Martian atmospheric conditions. We find that different dune shapes as those imaged by Mars Global Surveyor could have been formed by the action of sand-moving winds occurring on today's Mars. Our calculations show, however, that Martian dunes could be only formed due to the higher efficiency of Martian win...

Whether the winds of the present Mars are shaping the variety of dune forms observed on the Martian surface has remained an open question that challenged planetary scientists for decades. In order to elucidate this issue, we have studied sand transport and dune formation from two different points of view. The first approach consists of solving the equations of aeolian transport at the level of ...

Isolated landscapes largely shaped by aeolian processes can occur on Earth, while the majority of Mars' recent history has been dominated by wind-driven activity. Resultantly, Martian landscapes often exhibit large-scale aeolian features, including yardang landforms carved from sedimentary-layered deposits. High-resolution orbital monitoring has revealed that persistent bedform activity is occu...
متن کاملDune formation under bimodal winds.
The study of dune morphology represents a valuable tool in the investigation of planetary wind systems--the primary factor controlling the dune shape is the wind directionality. However, our understanding of dune formation is still limited to the simplest situation of unidirectional winds: There is no model that solves the equations of sand transport under the most common situation of seasonall...
